Maimon ben Joseph

Maimon ben Joseph
(d. 1165/70)
   Spanish rabbi and dayyan, father of Maimonides. He served as dayyan in C6rdoba, and wrote an Arabic commentary on the Bible. In 1148 he left Spain with his family because of persecution by the Almohades after their conquest of the city. For about ten years he wandered through Spain and possibly also Provence. In about 1160 he emigrated to Fez, Morocco; he later moved to Palestine, where he died. His writings include Iggeret ha-Nehamah, a guide for forced converts to Islam.
